Although mites and lice are generally less formidable than infectious diseases, they can nevertheless be a great source of discomfort for the parrot and be the cause of pecking, anemia, etc.
External parasites (such as mites and lice) often cause itchy, dull, broken or ruffled plumage.
Scabs can also cover the entire beak and legs during infestation by certain mites (Cnemidocoptes).
Placing a piece of white paper on the bird’s perch overnight can spot some parasites like red mites.
The treatments are antiparasitics in the form of powder, spray or injections.
Good general hygiene and regular cleaning of the cage as well as biannual disinfection generally prevent this type of affection.
