The caique parrot is a very sociable parrot. Every person, animal, or object he encounters is good amusement.
There are mainly three species that are regularly owned and bred among hobbyists.
The caique is native to South America (Peru, Brazil, Guyana) and enjoys living in the canopy.
The first: is the black-headed caique parrot (Pionites melanocephala melanocephala) The second: is the orange-headed caique – or peach-headed (Pionites leucogaster xanthomeria)
The third: is the green-thighed caique (Pionites leucogaster leucogaster) which is, unfortunately, less often encountered.
As a general rule, it breeds from the 3rd year but some couples will only start from 4 years old.
Some reported cases of late reproduction, around 6 or 7 years old! On the other hand,
there are a few exceptions with pairs starting in the second year, but often in this case following a pair formed with a hand-raised female.
The longevity of the species, according to some authors, varies from 25 to 40 years!
The caique can very well be happy in an indoor cage. If you have it as a pet bird, provide it with an aviary of 80 * 60 minimum with ropes and various toys. It will of course have to be taken out very regularly.
