The Budgie( Melopsittacus undulatus ) is a species of Australian bird in the family Psittacidae (commonly known as Budgies and Typical Parakeets).
It is the only species in the genus Melopsittacus and in the tribe Melopsittacini.
Its name is due to the fact that it has several undulations around its body, but some parakeets may have very fine or none at all.
Budgies have a size of about 18 centimeters in length, a wingspan of 30 centimeters, and weigh between 29 and 40 grams.
They acquire their adult plumage around the age of 3 or 4 months. They can live 10 years or more.
The sex of a budgerigar is not obvious during the first part of its life. Indeed, the only real way is the DNA test, which remains the safest.
The Budgerigar is one of the few species of Psittacidae domesticated as a pet.
Considered the most common parakeet as a pet in the world and probably the second bird after the canary, it has been bred in captivity since the 1850s.
